The South Umpqua is the other tributary of the Main Umpqua River whose headwaters are situated just east of Rosburg while originating near Tiller, Oregon. The South Umpqua is one of my favorite places to fish for winter steelhead. The South Umpqua has a mix of hatchery and wild steelhead run and can also produce large fish over 20lbs.Last week, the number of fish passing through the Winchester Dam fish ladder continued to average over 100 fish per day. Several hundred coho were counted during the past few days, with adult coho and coho jacks included in the total count. A few fall chinook and summer steelhead were also in the fish total.
